Peter Paul and Mary
in Concert 1967

I still remember the night with Peter Paul and Mary,
especially after the show with Mary Travers, Mary was from
Louisville and the daughter of two Louisville
newspaper journalist, who worked for the same newspaper at
one time that our own big city newspaper guy, Earl Cox had
managed to land a sports writing job, later to become the
sports editor. Mary was exactly ten years old than I
and had been living in the Greenwich village in New York,
she loved to talk journalism and music, I fit right in that
night and enjoy sharing the 60's movement with her.

player for Elvis Presley, he also gave him the scarves each
night and Kentucky's own Eddie Miles, Elvis Tribute
artist during a 2005 New Year's Midnight explosion Tribute
to Elvis at Memories Theater in Pigeon Forge, Tenn. This was
one of the last performances that Charlie did, he died March
6, 2006. Eddie Miles is from Holly Cross, Kentucky, I
met Eddie many years ago in Frankfort when he opened for the
summer festival during my time in Frankfort with then Gov.
Wendell Ford.
Exiles 1967

In 1963, a group of
high school students started a
rock and roll band in
Richmond, Kentucky. They called themselves the Exiles.
Those original Richmond Exiles were
Jimmy Stokley,
Ronnie 'Mac' Davenport,
Ronnie Hall, Paul Smith,
J. P. Pennington, and
Buzz Cornelison.
Richmond natives Mike Howard, Larry Jackson, and Billy
Luxon were also members of the Exiles in the 1960s. Most of
the Exiles were students at
Madison Central and Madison High School in Richmond when
the band formed and played together from 1963-65.
Stokley (18
October
1943 -
13 August
1985) was the lead singer of the group and continued in
that capacity until 1979. It is Stokley's lead voice that is
prominent on Exile's 1978
Billboard
pop music
chart-topper, "Kiss You All Over".
I got to know these guys early
in my life when I worked for WIRV, Jimmy and JP brought me a
copy of their first record one Saturday to play on the air
"Stay With Me", I still have that 45 record and you can
listen to it on the Music page. They were a big hit at
the old "Specks" in Richmond, I had to go up the back stairs
to help set up the sound in those days, I was only 17/18 at
the time, way to young to go thru the front door so I used
the stairs (fireescape) off water street.
Renfro Valley
Stars

Long time friends and local entertainers Judge Ralph
McClanahann, Jim Gaskin, Host of the Refro Valley "Gatherin"
and Country Music Star and song writer, Asa Martin.
Both Jim and Ralph past on to join Asa this past year to
perform on God's stage under the stars in Heaven. Jim
Gaskin, 28-year veteran of the Renfro Valley Barn Dance, Jim
had been the host of the Renfro Valley Sunday Morning
Gathering since 1983. The program, which went on the air in
1943, is one of the oldest continuous radio shows in
America. Only two others have narrated the program: its
founder Mr. John Lair and Mr. Grant Turner.
Note: Jim started me out in radio at a young age of 15 in
1963 by letting me work for him at WIRV on weekends
and evenings. It was one of the best jobs I ever had,
I could not wait to get to work and dreaded when sundown
came and we had to shut down the transmitter. You can
enjoy some of the early WIRV Radio programs thanks to my
partner at WIRV Dave Cox in the early 60's at his web site,
www.davidecox.com
enjoy.

The Bubble Gum Machine opened for Paul Revere and the
Radiers, radio personallity from WAKY, Mason Lee
Dixon, left, talks with Mark Linsey back stage before the
show. Note: I worked with Mason Lee when he was at
WIRV and went by his real name, Dave Bratcher. Dave
also did a night shift at WVLK and was known as Jay Rabbitt
and had a side kick know only as the "Fox"... I will never
tell!
